“Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than Sheol—what can you know? Their measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea.” Job 11:7-9
Some things are beyond our ability to fully comprehend. Some are most difficult to grasp and conceptualize. God being infinite is one of those. This truly amazing attribute of His should make us humble. This attribute should cause us to stand in awe and wonder, as we are reminded of and recognize God’s greatness and that He is a being “other” than us.
Divers, spelunkers, explorers and the like spend much time searching, discovering, and sharing the nooks, crannies, and depths of the marvels of God’s creation. Yet, think about the reality of divine infinity, that which is true of our Creator alone, as communicated in the rhetorical questions in Job 11. Can you search out the deep things of God? No, we can’t. Can you find out the limits of the Almighty? No, we can’t. And ponder the truths in the answers: They are higher than the heavens. Wow! What can do you? Nothing. Deeper than Sheol. Incredible. What can you know? So very little.
Yet, God is pleased to reveal this attribute of His to us that we would know Him more. Spend some time to study and meditate on this:
- We are finite, God is not. God is infinite in His being and perfection (Westminster Confession of Faith 2.1, Job 26:14, Psalm 139:6)
- God has created us with limits (Psalm 90:10). For example, we have limited life spans, limited understanding and resources. However, God, Himself, is boundless, limitless in His being, ability, and work.
- God is immeasurable. Their measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea (v.9). His understanding is beyond measure (Psalm 147:5).
- In His divine infinity, God isn’t hindered by time and space. In fact, He fills and stands sovereign over time and space. God inhabits eternity (Isaiah 57:15). From everlasting to everlasting, He is God (Psalm 93:2).
What else can we add to this list, that God has revealed to us in Scripture, about the infinite nature of His being?
Divine infinity is truly mind blowing to consider. It’s far beyond what we can fully understand. God’s infinity should drive us to our knees in humility as we see and know more of His greatness and further grasp the reality that God is God and we are not. How truly awesome and magnificent our God is! Thinking about His infinity only magnifies the wonder of His love for us in Christ. That the infinite God would even think twice of us who are but dust. O, that the infinite God, in His boundless love, would condesend and pursue those who were enemies and make us His children through the blood of His Son. O, the deep, deep love of Jesus! Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free. Have much joy and adoration, and give much praise to the infinite God who is your God, who loves you and is at work in you and for you today!
